Thistles

The Rat Portage Thistles, later re-named (as was the town sitting on Lake of the Woods) to the Kenora Thistles, won the Stanley Cup in 1907. Among the clean-shaven lads on this team was one Art Ross, whose name was later attached to the Art Ross Trophy, Hockey's accolade to the annual scoring leader. The Montreal Wanderers was the losing team that year, an unaccustomed position for such a large city team. The disgrace of losing to a team named for a prickly flower must have made the mighty Wanderers squirm. So much so, that they challenged the Thistles for the Stanley Cup....again....in the same year.

So, in 1907 (as in 1896, 1899, 1902, 1903, 1906, & 1910), there were two Stanley Cup champions in the same year. And you thought the current rules in the NHL regarding penalties were confusing.

Why bring up the Rat Portage Thistles? Well, Mr. Whisky Prajer was discussing the NHL's comeback, so I thought I'd throw some stubbies on the fire.

Comments:
Ah, the Great Stanley Schism! And it took a Croatian to bring it to light - well done!

Side note: have you been to Kenora since they quit hauling logs through the water? All sorts of wildlife is making a comeback, and the water is astonishingly clean. A nice place is getting even nicer. Now if they could just change the name back to Rat Portage, we could make it our own private haven...

WP,
Spent a glorious week on Lake of the Woods, with departure and return points being Kenora, about 8 years ago. Our family along with friends form Edmonton rented a houseboat and we put-putted around from deserted island to deserted island, making sure we stayed upwind from the pelican guano layered tree-less island in the middle of the lake. No luck with catching any muskellunges, although the alligator spanning turtles were plentiful and kept you on your toes when you were in the gorgeously clean waters.

Kenora was an interesting little place. The museum was fabulous. Seriously. A great job of getting things together and their Stanley Cup exhibit even had our Canadian comrades stumped.
The drive from Delaware to Kenora and back was fine as we stopped along the way at all of the Large Animal Exhibits. We especially loved Sault Ste. Marie, as there was
this and this and this. A Large Animal paradise.

Care to offer any explanation as to why Sault Ste. Marie seems to be the center of Large Canadian Roadside Attractions ?
